Mohagher Iqbal, chairperson of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Peace Implementing Panel, expressed gratitude for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s commitment to allow the Bangsamoro Parliament to independently select its next chief minister. The assurance from the national government signals a non-interference policy regarding the internal affairs of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). Iqbal, also a Member of Parliament (MP), described the President’s statement as a “clear” indication of respect for the region’s autonomy. This development is seen as crucial for the ongoing peace process and the strengthening of self-governance within the BARMM. The Bangsamoro Parliament will now proceed with its selection process without external pressure from the national government in Manila. The commitment aims to uphold the spirit of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro and ensure a smooth transition of leadership. This positive step reinforces the foundations of peace and stability in the region surrounding Cotabato City.
