Following criticism of insufficient police presence during recent demonstrations, France’s Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez visited Marseille on Monday evening. Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan, who had requested the Minister’s visit, described the subsequent discussion as “frank” and “beneficial.” Payan had publicly criticized the number of law enforcement officers deployed in Marseille since Saturday, holding the state accountable for incidents of violence and looting. Nuñez reportedly promised Payan additional security forces to manage the protest planned for this Saturday in Marseille. The Mayor had previously demanded explanations from the government regarding the unrest. This commitment aims to prevent a repeat of the disturbances experienced in Marseille.
