The Head of the National Security Bureau of Poland, Bartosz Grodecki, has criticized the decision by the Lviv Regional Council to designate 2027 as the year of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and Roman Shukhevych. Grodecki emphasized that while Poland continues to support Ukraine, this support does not imply silence regarding the glorification of those responsible for crimes against Poles. The decision by the Lviv Regional Council has sparked controversy, highlighting sensitivities surrounding the historical relationship between Poland and Ukraine. The criticism comes as Poland remains a key ally to Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict. Grodecki’s statement underscores the importance of acknowledging historical complexities even while fostering strong bilateral ties. This dispute centers on the UPA’s role during World War II and the subsequent conflicts, particularly the Volhynian Massacre. The Polish official stated that honoring those linked to atrocities is unacceptable.
