Over 200 employees of Latvian Public Media (LSM) have voiced concerns regarding proposed media law changes in Latvia. They have sent an open letter to the Saeima Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee and members of the Saeima, requesting they reconsider a fast-track review of the proposals. The employees are specifically asking for the rejection of a rapid reading of the law. Instead, they are urging the committee to back suggestions from the public media watchdog designed to safeguard LSM’s independence going forward. The letter emphasizes the importance of ensuring LSM can operate without undue influence. This action highlights anxieties within Latvian Public Media about potential threats to its autonomy and editorial freedom. The employees believe a careful and considered approach to the new legislation is crucial.
