Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has criticized a decision by the Lviv Regional Council to declare 2027 the year of Roman Shukhevych, a commander of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). The Ministry in Kyiv stated the move is damaging to bilateral relations with Poland. Ukrainian diplomacy asserted the decision will have the opposite of the intended effect. Shukhevych remains a deeply divisive figure, accused of war crimes during World War II, particularly against Polish civilians. The declaration has sparked concern about the differing interpretations of history between Ukraine and Poland. This criticism highlights ongoing sensitivities surrounding historical memory and its impact on contemporary political relations between the two countries, specifically in Lviv and Kyiv. The Ministry's statement indicates a concern for maintaining positive relations with Poland despite internal regional commemorations.
