A Kenyan court has found Paul Mackenzie, a religious leader, guilty of starving 190 children and one adult to death. Mackenzie, who led a doomsday cult believing the end of times was near, convinced his followers to starve their children in order to "meet Jesus sooner." The deaths occurred between January 2021 and September 2023 within the Shakahola Forest in Kenya. The judge determined Mackenzie exploited his followers’ belief that he was a direct voice for Jesus. His Good News International Church was previously shut down in 2019 due to earlier controversies, after which he lured followers to the forest under the guise of affordable farmland, where they faced a heavily armed militia. Testimony revealed a system of prioritized starvation – children first, then teenagers, women, and finally men – and a ban on medical treatment, which Mackenzie considered “an instrument of Satan.” Sentencing will occur in three weeks.
