A court in Kenya has found the leader of a doomsday cult guilty of the murders of 191 people who died from starvation. The deaths occurred within the Shakahola Forest in Kilifi County, Kenya, after followers were allegedly persuaded to starve themselves in the belief that they would meet their maker. The cult leader, Ezekiel Omboko Bokole, and other key figures had directed followers to fast to death in order to reach heaven. Authorities discovered mass graves in the forest after a years-long investigation launched in response to reports of the practice. The prosecution presented evidence of how Bokole and his associates controlled and manipulated followers, instructing them to abstain from food and medical care. This conviction marks a significant step in holding those responsible accountable for one of Kenya’s deadliest cult-related tragedies. The investigation is still ongoing to determine the full extent of the deaths and identify any additional individuals involved.
