Hungary’s tax-based sports funding system, known locally as “tao,” which has operated for over fifteen years, will cease to exist next year. In its place, the government will provide direct funding amounting to 150 billion Hungarian Forints. While this amount is considered sufficient in principle, the key challenge now lies in determining the distribution method. This transition marks a significant shift in how Hungarian sports organizations receive financial support. Questions remain regarding whether the direct funding will effectively replace the previous system’s broader reach. Stakeholders will closely monitor the implementation to ensure equitable access. Discussions surrounding alternative models are expected in the coming months.
