A man from Guatemala has been sentenced to 30 years in prison in the US for his role in a human smuggling operation that resulted in the deaths of 53 migrants in 2022. The migrants tragically suffocated inside a trailer during a three-hour journey from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, to San Antonio, Texas. The Guatemalan national, aged 50, confessed to arranging travel documents and lodging for two of the deceased migrants, as well as two who sustained severe injuries. These migrants, originating from Guatemala and other Central and South American nations, had paid up to $15,000 for the attempted border crossing. Prosecutors detailed the horrific suffering endured by the migrants in the trailer during their final hours, citing evidence indicating desperate attempts to escape. The trailer’s air conditioning was non-functional, resulting in extremely high temperatures, and authorities discovered 48 bodies upon opening the abandoned trailer on a desolate road in San Antonio, with five additional deaths occurring in hospitals following the transport of sixteen migrants. Additional suspects in the case are awaiting sentencing, following previous sentences of life imprisonment and 83 years handed down to two other individuals involved last year.
