A recent seminar hosted by the Commercial and Industrial Bank (CIB) Ghana, in collaboration with the Bank of Ghana and Ministry of Finance, focused on the transmission of monetary policy and credit growth within Ghana. The third Post-Monetary Policy Committee (Post-MPC) Policy Seminar explored why the benefits of lower interest rates aren’t being equally distributed among borrowers. Research presented indicates that customers of Ghana’s universal banks are experiencing faster access to cheaper credit compared to those utilizing community and microfinance banks. Representatives from banks, traders, and various industries participated in the discussions, seeking to understand these disparities. This uneven transmission impacts the overall effectiveness of monetary policy in Ghana. The seminar aimed to identify factors hindering access for smaller financial institutions’ customers and potential solutions to ensure broader economic impact. Further investigation is expected to help bridge the gap in credit access across Ghana’s banking sector.
