A recent analysis in Ghana reveals that nearly 95% of senior high schools (SHSs) implicated in reported sexual abuse cases since 2015 fall under Categories B or C. This statistic does not indicate Category A schools are safer, but rather reflects the number of schools involved. The finding emerges alongside a surge in demand for Category A schools, with 313,283 candidates listing them as their first choice for placement in 2026. However, only 76,417 vacancies are available in those schools. JoyNews Research analyzed 44 reported cases involving teachers to arrive at these conclusions, highlighting a concerning disparity between school preference and the locations of reported abuse. The data raises questions about safety standards and resource allocation within the Ghanaian secondary education system.
