The World Food Programme (WFP) announced Monday it will discontinue monthly food assistance to 500,000 people in Gaza due to a critical funding shortage, despite the continued acute humanitarian needs in the war-affected Palestinian territory. Despite previously mitigating famine conditions in Gaza last year, the WFP warns conditions haven't improved sufficiently to warrant aid reduction. Currently, approximately 1.1 million Palestinians in Gaza—roughly half the population—receive reduced food or cash assistance monthly. WFP Country Director Shaun Hughes, speaking from the agency’s office in east Jerusalem, highlighted the ongoing dangers, including daily airstrikes, widespread displacement, and brutal humanitarian conditions, noting almost everyone remains without permanent housing. Approximately 1.4 million people, two-thirds of Gaza’s population, remain acutely food insecure. While assistance increased after a US-brokered ceasefire in Gaza, Israel’s continued strikes have led to a situation where the WFP must now reduce aid, not due to access issues, but due to insufficient funding.
