France experienced a weekend of intense protests marred by significant violence across the country. Hundreds of thousands took to the streets to demonstrate against government policies, the state of education, and the rising cost of living. While many demonstrations were peaceful, a contingent of masked rioters, some travelling from other European countries, engaged in widespread looting, arson, and vandalism. In Paris alone, 1500 fires were reported, while the town halls in Limoges and Marseille were attacked. The police were overwhelmed by the unexpectedly high turnout – between 550,000 and 800,000 demonstrators, significantly exceeding initial estimates of 60,000 to 100,000 – and were unable to effectively contain the unrest. The French government is holding emergency meetings and implementing increased security measures in response to the events.
