Maurice Kamto, former president of the Mouvement pour la renaissance du Cameroun (MRC), has accused the Cameroonian government of unconstitutionally altering the government structure. The MRC formally lodged a complaint with the African Union on April 20, 2026, alleging illegal constitutional changes and repeated, unlawful election postponements. The recently published memorandum details the MRC’s claims that the Cameroonian Congress illegally modified the Constitution by creating a vice-presidency filled by appointment, establishing a line of succession. The MRC argues this violates Article 64 of the Cameroonian Constitution, which protects the republic’s democratic principles. They further contend this action contradicts core tenets of the African Union, specifically those promoting democracy, popular participation, and good governance as outlined in the African Charter on Democracy and Governance. The party is still awaiting sanctions from the African Union following their initial complaint.
