A hairdresser in Australia is being lauded for his quick actions after a parliament member was struck by a vehicle near his business. Ricky Jefferies, owner of Ricky Chops in Wangaratta, Victoria, subdued the driver of a Toyota LandCruiser who allegedly intentionally hit Helen Haines, severely injuring her. Jefferies, who had just finished cutting a family's hair, reacted immediately after hearing a loud crash outside his shop. The incident occurred near Haines’ party office, approximately three hours northeast of Melbourne, while she was standing near her car’s trunk. Jefferies disarmed and restrained the suspect until police arrived, with Australian Prime Minister Albanese calling him a hero. The 65-year-old MP was airlifted to a Melbourne hospital where she underwent emergency surgery and has since had a leg amputated; the 43-year-old suspect, identified as a long-time environmental activist opposing logging in Victoria, is in custody. Initial investigations suggest the driver made a U-turn before intentionally hitting Haines, leading Albanese to describe the incident as an attack.
