Alberta is conducting a non-binding referendum on its continued membership in Canada, a first for the oil-rich province. The vote, held on Monday, asks residents if Alberta should pursue a binding referendum on separation. Current polls indicate approximately 70% of Albertans favour remaining in Canada, with around 25% supporting independence. The referendum includes ten questions, with the final one directly addressing the separation issue; a simple majority in favor could initiate the process for a formal separation vote. Premier Danielle Smith initiated the referendum to gauge public opinion, following pressure from separatist groups who believe Alberta’s wealth benefits other Canadian provinces unfairly and that federal bureaucracy hinders economic growth. Despite supporting the referendum, Smith herself has stated she voted to remain within Canada. Previous separation referendums have been held in Quebec, but not in Alberta.
