Yemen’s Houthi movement has demonstrated a sustained ability to strike targets within Saudi Arabia using a diverse arsenal of missiles and drones. Since early September, key infrastructure including airports in Riyadh and other locations across Saudi Arabia have been repeatedly targeted, with Riyadh’s airport hit 20 times. This renewed hostility was sparked by a Saudi bombardment of Sanaa airport in Yemen, aimed at preventing a Houthi delegation from landing. The Houthis have adopted a “tit-for-tat” strategy, escalating attacks in response to Saudi actions, framing their campaign as a reciprocal response to blockades and airport strikes. Their arsenal includes seized weaponry from when they took Sanaa in 2014, as well as smuggled and self-manufactured systems sourced primarily via the Arabian Sea, including Iranian-derived missiles like the Kheibar Shekan. The Houthis are also targeting locations in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a critical waterway at the entrance to the Red Sea.
