Yala, Thailand’s southernmost province, is attempting a significant economic transformation by leveraging its natural resources and agricultural potential. The municipality is pursuing recognition as a “Geographical Indication (GI) metropolis,” aiming to establish local produce as a source of economic strength. Yala's advantages include mineral-rich soil, clean air, and abundant fresh water, all contributing to high-quality agricultural products. This initiative seeks to turn Yala’s agricultural strengths into “economic soft power.” The city hopes this strategy will boost its economy and redefine its image beyond being known as “the southernmost of Siam, a beautiful border city.” The plan focuses on capitalizing on uniquely Yala-grown products through GI certification. This development could position Yala as a key agricultural hub within Thailand.
