The Supreme Court of Bangladesh acquitted Fatima Mashkura, the wife of Ibrahim Abu Khalil, a leader of the Tablighi Jamaat in Sylhet, in connection with his 2015 murder. Mashkura had previously been sentenced to death by a lower court. The Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, overturned the death sentence on Wednesday, January 17th, following a successful appeal. Senior lawyer S.M. Shahjahan represented Mashkura during the appeal hearing. Khalil, 55, was the Amir of the Dhopadighir Uttarpar regional branch of the Tablighi Jamaat at the time of his death. Further details of the case and the court’s reasoning were not immediately available.
