A recent analysis highlights the fragile state of democracy in the Western Balkans, characterized by politicized institutions and weak governance. The region’s history demonstrates a lack of deeply rooted democratic principles, hindering lasting political accountability. The EU enlargement policy is presented as a critical factor in bolstering democratic development within the Western Balkans. This policy serves not only to expand the EU’s influence but also to reinforce its core identity. Effective integration into the EU is therefore viewed as essential for strengthening the rule of law and promoting genuine democratic practices in the region. Without the anchor of potential EU membership, progress towards stable, accountable governance in the Western Balkans remains uncertain.
