Rapid urbanization in Uganda’s West Nile subregion is fueling a growing climate and public health crisis due to inadequate waste management practices. Open dumpsites and the burning of garbage are common, leading to environmental degradation and pollution of local river streams. The unregulated disposal of waste is exacerbating existing environmental problems and disproportionately impacting the health of residents. Experts are framing this situation as a climate justice issue, highlighting the unequal burden placed on communities already vulnerable to climate change impacts. The lack of proper waste treatment facilities contributes to the worsening conditions. This issue demands urgent attention and sustainable waste management solutions to protect both the environment and public health in the region. The situation is quietly escalating into a significant crisis.
