Biljana Plavšić, a former Bosnian-Serb leader, has died in Serbia at the age of 96. In 2003, she was sentenced to eleven years in prison for war crimes committed during the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia. During the 1990s wars, Plavšić served as president of Republika Srpska, a breakaway republic within Bosnia. She ultimately served two-thirds of her sentence before being released. The Swedish broadcaster SVT reported on her death. Her conviction stemmed from atrocities committed during the Bosnian War. Plavšić’s death marks the end of a controversial chapter in the history of the region.
