A woman named Mahal Baloch became the victim of rapid online misinformation in August 2024 when photos of her were falsely labeled as a suicide bomber. The inaccurate claims spread virally on social media, severely impacting her life and the safety of her family. Investigations by iVerify Pakistan and police confirmed the attacker was a different individual, a 23-year-old law student using the alias Zilan Kurd. This case exemplifies a broader trend of false claims spreading online, with iVerify Pakistan documenting over 1,000 misleading claims between December 2023 and November 2025. The misidentification led to a serious breach of privacy, public disclosure of personal information, and a “character assassination” that has made normal life impossible for Baloch and her children, who are now unable to attend school. Her lawyer emphasized the deliberate and damaging nature of the accusation, going beyond a simple error, and creating a situation of “collective punishment” for her family.
