A remarkable Viking-era coin hoard, dubbed the Mørstad treasure, has been discovered in Rena, Norway, containing a total of 4,886 coins. The coins are primarily of German and English origin, dating back to the late Viking Age. However, the inclusion of four coins from the reign of King Harald Hardråde dates the hoard to approximately 1046-1047 AD. Coin expert Svein Harald Gullbekk has hailed the find as one of the largest Viking coin hoards ever discovered. Researchers believe the total number of coins recovered could increase, as further excavations are planned for the site next year. The discovery provides valuable insights into the trade and economic activity during the Viking period. This significant archaeological find is managed by the Museum of Cultural History.
