A Vietnamese-flagged cargo ship has sunk in the South China Sea, near Vietnam’s coast and the Fiery Cross Reef. Authorities have rescued 39 individuals, but 23 crew members remain missing as of today. The initial distress signal was received by a Chinese rescue vessel, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation involving six additional Chinese ships, a helicopter, and a Vietnamese vessel. Rescue teams are utilizing satellite imagery to aid in locating the missing Vietnamese nationals. Nearby ships have also been asked to be vigilant for any signs of survivors. The Fiery Cross Reef is part of the disputed Spratly Islands, claimed by China, Vietnam, and the Philippines, a region strategically important and rich in resources.
