Authorities on Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam, have forcibly acquired over 3.6 hectares of land from 25 households in An Thoi commune to facilitate a project related to the 2027 APEC summit. While two households voluntarily surrendered their land, the remaining 23 faced compulsory acquisition by local authorities and related units. The land seizure is intended to clear the way for development associated with hosting the international economic forum. This action highlights the government’s preparations for the APEC event and its commitment to infrastructure development. The compulsory acquisition process has displaced residents of An Thoi commune. Details regarding compensation and relocation assistance for the affected households have not been immediately released. The project aims to enhance Phu Quoc’s infrastructure in anticipation of increased international attention during APEC 2027.
