Eight days after a powerful earthquake struck Venezuela, a 43-year-old security guard named Erman Gil was pulled alive from the debris of a collapsed seven-story building in the city of Catia La Mar. The rescue was a complex, multi-national effort involving teams from Venezuela, Chile, the US, Portugal, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Mexico, who worked tirelessly for three days to reach him. Rescuers provided Gil with water and oxygen via tubes during the ordeal. The operation culminated in a final push by around thirty people, including rescuers who dug a three-meter tunnel. Authorities report that the death toll has reached 2,295 with over 11,000 injured, and approximately 13,000 people are currently homeless. Focus is now shifting to providing shelter, food, and healthcare to survivors and preventing disease outbreak.
