A joint operation between the United States and Venezuela has resulted in the death of Óscar Giovany Hernández Barrios, the leader of the notorious Tren de Aragua gang. Hernández, also known as “El 50,” was killed in a confrontation with Venezuelan security forces in the state of Apure. Tren de Aragua is a transnational criminal organization responsible for a wide range of crimes including murder, extortion, and human trafficking, operating in Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, and beyond. The operation marks a rare instance of security cooperation between the US and Venezuela, countries that have historically had strained relations. Venezuelan authorities had offered a reward for Hernández’s capture. US officials confirmed their involvement, highlighting the shared interest in disrupting transnational criminal networks. This action signals a potential shift towards increased collaboration on security matters despite ongoing political differences.
