The death toll from the recent twin earthquakes in Venezuela has risen to nearly 3,000, with tens of thousands more reported missing. The 7.2 and 7.5-magnitude quakes, which struck on June 24th, caused widespread destruction, particularly in the coastal La Guaira region. While international rescue teams initially provided crucial assistance, operations are now winding down as the critical 72-hour window for finding survivors passes. Despite this, families continue to search for loved ones amongst the rubble. Interim President Delcy Rodriguez acknowledged the nation’s grief and honored the departing international teams. Several US and South American teams are preparing to leave, citing a lack of signs of life in ongoing searches, however, discontent is growing among Venezuelans regarding the government’s response to the disaster.
