Former President Trump announced the death of Héctor Rusthenford Guerrero Flores, alias Niño Guerrero, leader of the Venezuelan drug gang Tren de Aragua. The US government claims to have conducted the operation in coordination with Venezuelan authorities, releasing a video depicting an explosion. Trump characterized Tren de Aragua as a highly dangerous terrorist organization and stated the action delivers justice for its victims. The gang originated in a Venezuelan prison a decade ago and has since expanded into a transnational criminal network. The US designated Tren de Aragua as a foreign terrorist organization shortly after Trump’s initial presidency, launching subsequent operations against suspected drug trafficking. While Trump has accused Venezuelan President Maduro of ties to the gang, no evidence has surfaced to support these claims. Guerrero previously escaped from prison during a deadly riot in 2023, having enjoyed privileged conditions during his incarceration.
