The United States and Iran have announced the outcomes of their initial talks held in Lucerne, Switzerland, over the weekend. Iran stated it reached an agreement with the US to lift economic sanctions and release frozen assets, though resolving the conflict in Lebanon remains a key challenge. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced progress in halting the war in Lebanon through mediation by Pakistan and Qatar, including lifting oil export restrictions and releasing some frozen funds to initiate Iran’s reconstruction plans. The US Deputy President Jay D. Vance clarified that released Iranian funds can only be used to purchase American goods like wheat and barley, prohibiting their use for funding terrorism. Furthermore, Iran agreed to allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency to re-examine its nuclear program. A new “conflict monitoring unit” involving Iran will be established to aid in a ceasefire in Lebanon. Qatar and Pakistan, the mediating parties, described the initial meeting as “positive and constructive,” and both sides agreed to finalize a peace deal within 60 days, also committing to efforts to avoid incidents in the Strait of Hormuz.
