UNESCO has placed Paramaribo’s historic center on its list of World Heritage in Danger, citing fire hazards and controversial construction projects as primary concerns. The center, largely composed of wooden buildings, was originally inscribed on the World Heritage list in 2002 and holds significant cultural and touristic value. The designation serves as a warning to the Surinamese government, urging them to implement measures to better protect the area and avoid potential loss of its status. Specifically, the construction of the National Assembly and the Yogh parking tower disregarded UNESCO recommendations and negatively impact the protected cityscape. The prevalence of vacant wooden structures also increases fire risk, a concern highlighted by a major fire in 2025 that destroyed historical buildings. Heritage officials report this action was anticipated, as previous warnings have been ignored, and the government should have foreseen these consequences.
