Ulaanbaatar city officials are considering a temporary suspension of scooter and moped rental services due to upcoming amendments to traffic safety laws, set to take effect July 1, 2026. These changes will require stricter regulations, including mandatory training for riders aged 18 and over, vehicle registration, insurance, and adherence to updated traffic rules. The head of the Traffic Police Department, Colonel S.Galbadrakh, stated that a temporary halt to services may be unavoidable to facilitate a smooth transition and ensure compliance. Concerns were raised regarding the lack of clarity on licensing and potential conflicts with businesses during the implementation phase. City officials are preparing to discuss the matter further at a City Council meeting, involving relevant departments like the Public Transportation Authority and the Road Development Authority, to determine a course of action. The goal is to improve road safety and reduce traffic accidents.
