Ukrainian forces recently intercepted a “Geran-5” drone traveling at 425 km/h, a type of jet-powered drone that has proven difficult to counter. Despite this success, Ukraine is currently intercepting just over half of Russia’s jet-powered drones. This is a significantly lower rate than the over 90% success rate achieved against the older Shahed drones. The decrease in interception rates coincides with increased Russian production of both drone types, with Moscow manufacturing Shaheds “by the thousand.” The higher speed of the “Geran-5” drones presents a challenge to Ukrainian air defenses, requiring continued adaptation in interception strategies. This suggests a shifting dynamic in drone warfare as Russia employs more advanced and faster aerial threats.
