Ukraine has completed the final prerequisite for the European Union to begin formal accession talks. The Ukrainian government recently approved and submitted a revised national action plan for minority rights to Brussels. This plan was developed in close consultation with EU member states to ensure alignment with European standards. The approval addresses longstanding concerns regarding the protection of national minorities within Ukraine. This step unlocks the first phase of EU accession negotiations, organized into thematic “clusters.” While significant challenges remain, this marks a crucial advancement in Ukraine’s bid to join the European Union, following its candidate status granted in 2022. The EU is expected to formally approve the start of accession talks in December.
