Cross-border strikes between Russia and Ukraine have resulted in at least twelve confirmed fatalities. Nine deaths were reported in the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Kharkiv, while three deaths occurred in regions south of Moscow. Notably, the Dormition Cathedral in Kyiv, part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery complex, sustained fire damage to its roof during the attacks. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, though it occurred amidst ongoing shelling. These reciprocal attacks represent a significant escalation in the conflict, impacting both civilian and religious sites. Both sides have accused each other of indiscriminate targeting and escalating hostilities. The extent of further damage and casualties remains unclear as fighting continues.
