The UK government is negotiating with Pakistan regarding the deportation of Shabbir Ahmed, a leader of the Rochdale grooming gang, following his recent release from prison. Ahmed, a dual British-Pakistani citizen, was convicted in 2012 of multiple sexual offences against girls. Despite prior legal obstacles preventing deportation, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has ordered a review of the case due to public outcry and calls for his removal, including from prominent figures like Andy Burnham. Officials acknowledge securing deportation requires Pakistani agreement, which has historically been a challenge. Ahmed is currently under 24-hour monitoring with a GPS tag and faces immediate re-imprisonment for any license violation. His British citizenship was revoked after conviction, initially suggesting deportation would follow his sentence, but a 55-year-old law complicated the process. The government says it is exploring all available options to remove Ahmed from the UK.
