The Director-General of MI5, the United Kingdom’s domestic security service, has identified Russia, Iran, and artificial intelligence (AI) as the biggest threats to UK national security. He stated that threats from foreign adversaries have quadrupled over the past decade, with hostile actions stemming from state actors and terrorist organizations occurring at roughly equal rates. The MI5 chief considers Russia as “aggressor number one,” waging a non-military war to deter NATO intervention. Since the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, approximately one thousand Russian spies have been expelled from the United Kingdom, leading Russian intelligence services like the GROe to recruit British citizens through financial incentives or exploitation. Examples include the alleged plot to attack a drone factory in Swindon. Iran is similarly accused of orchestrating hostile activities, with fifty individuals arrested in the UK for Iran-related actions, often targeting the Jewish community. While remaining silent on the planned attack on the Fairford airbase, the chief acknowledged threats emanating from China, including intimidation of Chinese citizens residing in the United Kingdom and the use of front companies.
