Uganda currently earns $26 million annually from medical tourism, according to recent reports. This revenue stream was highlighted following a successful bone marrow transplant performed at the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) for a patient with multiple myeloma. Health Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi cited the transplant as evidence of the government's increasing focus on bolstering medical capabilities within the country. The procedure marks a significant advancement in Uganda’s healthcare sector. Despite the existing income, officials believe Uganda has substantial untapped potential to expand its medical tourism industry. Further investment and development in specialized treatments could significantly increase revenue and reduce the number of citizens seeking medical care abroad. This success at the UCI positions Uganda as a growing regional medical hub.
