In July 2014, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the King of Tooro Kingdom, undertook a six-day fast to demonstrate his opposition to the division of his kingdom’s ancestral lands. This protest arose after the Ugandan government officially recognized two new cultural institutions: the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu in Kasese and the Obudhingiya Bwa Bwamba in Bundibugyo. King Oyo viewed these recognitions as a fragmentation of Tooro’s traditional territory. Reports indicate that President Yoweri Museveni responded to the King’s demonstration with mockery, further escalating tensions.
