A Ugandan journalist, Arnold Anthony Mukose of Alternative Digital, has been cleared of charges related to falsely announcing the death of First Lady Janet Museveni. The Law Development Centre Magistrate’s Court dismissed the case on Monday, citing the prosecution’s failure to present any witnesses or evidence. Magistrate Ivan Maloba made the decision “for want of prosecution,” effectively ending the legal proceedings against Mukose. The journalist had been accused of spreading false information, a charge that raised concerns about press freedom in the country. This outcome suggests a lack of concrete evidence to support the allegations against Mukose. The case’s dismissal represents a potential win for media rights advocates in Uganda, though concerns regarding restrictions on journalistic expression remain. The State's inability to proceed with the case ultimately led to the journalist's acquittal.
