Kampala residents have grown accustomed to regular, planned power outages impacting daily life and essential services. Electricity officials attribute these disruptions to necessary upgrades of the aging power network, struggling to meet the demands of the rapidly expanding city. The Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) and Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) have jointly pledged improvements following an $83 million investment. This upgrade focuses on the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Transmission System, aiming to enhance reliability and capacity. Officials state the current outages are temporary inconveniences necessary for long-term stability. The project intends to minimize future disruptions and support continued economic growth in the region.
