Uganda’s medical intern doctors, represented by the Uganda Medical Association (UMA), have refused a government offer of daily lunch in lieu of their standard monthly allowance of 1 million Ugandan Shillings. UMA President Dr. Frank Asiimwe stated that a single meal is insufficient to cover the comprehensive needs of interns. These needs include provisions for breakfast, dinner, transportation, and personal healthcare expenses. The association argues that interns require financial support to manage their basic living costs during their training period. The government’s proposal was seen as a cost-cutting measure, but the UMA insists on the continuation of the established allowance system. The dispute highlights ongoing concerns regarding the welfare and support provided to medical professionals in training within Uganda’s healthcare system. Further negotiations between the UMA and the government are anticipated.
