Uganda is launching a nationwide program to assess and certify the vocational skills of over 55,000 candidates, including inmates currently serving prison sentences. Conducted by the Uganda Vocational and Technical Assessment Board (UVTAB), the assessments aim to provide formal recognition for skills acquired during incarceration. The 417 assessment centers across the country will employ competence-based evaluations. This initiative offers inmates an opportunity to gain credentials that may improve their prospects upon release and contribute to societal reintegration. The program underscores a growing focus on rehabilitation and equipping individuals with marketable skills. This move is expected to boost the Ugandan workforce with qualified tradespeople. It also signals a shift towards recognizing the value of vocational training within the correctional system.
