Uganda has unexpectedly entered the race for the next United Nations Secretary-General, presenting a new candidate to challenge Macky Sall, the former President of Senegal. Sall had been considered the leading African candidate and recently delivered a well-received presentation to the General Assembly, emphasizing dialogue and experience. However, his candidacy has been controversial, as it was put forward by Burundi, chair of the African Union, rather than Senegal itself, lacking official support from Dakar. The emergence of a Ugandan candidate further complicates the already scrutinized selection process. The UN Secretary-General position will become vacant at the end of the year, as António Guterres’ term concludes. Member states will now engage in consultations, with the Security Council recommending a nominee for the General Assembly's final approval.
