Turkiye officially enacted a ban on social media access for individuals under the age of 15, beginning November 1st. The decision follows parliamentary legislation passed in April aimed at safeguarding children and teenagers from the potential harms of online platforms. Social media providers are now required to implement age verification and other technical and administrative measures to enforce the restriction. The law prohibits offering services deemed likely to be addictive to children. This action places Turkiye among a growing number of nations, including Australia, implementing similar restrictions, while Britain and France consider following suit to combat issues like addiction, bullying, and eating disorders. However, rights groups have voiced concerns about freedom of expression in Turkiye, citing previous restrictions targeting LGBTQ communities, the media, and political opposition, alongside recent social media account blockages.
