Turkish authorities significantly increased their efforts to restrict access to information on the X platform in September, issuing blocking orders for at least 1,270 accounts. This figure dramatically exceeds the 995 accounts targeted throughout all of 2025, according to data from the Freedom of Expression Association’s (İFÖD) EngelliWeb project, as reported by Deutsche Welle’s Turkish edition. X, formerly known as Twitter, complied with a large majority of these requests, making 1,139 of the specified accounts unavailable to users in Turkey. The surge in blocking orders raises concerns about online freedom and censorship within Turkey. The data highlights a growing trend of restricting access to dissenting voices and information on social media. This action indicates a heightened level of control exerted by Turkish authorities over the digital space. The report from İFÖD’s EngelliWeb offers key insights into the scale of online censorship in Turkey.
