A dispute has erupted between US President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni following Trump’s claims that Meloni repeatedly requested a photo with him at the recent G7 summit. Meloni vehemently denied the allegations, stating that Italy does not beg for favors. The Italian Foreign Minister subsequently cancelled a planned visit to the US in response to what was perceived as a slight against the Prime Minister. Trump further escalated the situation by alleging Meloni sought the photo opportunity to rehabilitate her domestic standing after failing to support potential US military action against Iran. He claimed she wished to become friends again after the US would “win” against Iran. Meloni countered that her reputation doesn’t depend on a relationship with Trump, but on defending Italy’s national interests. The friction stems, in part, from Italy’s refusal to allow the use of its military bases during a potential conflict with Iran, damaging the previously close relationship between the two leaders, despite Meloni being considered a key European ally of Trump.
