Scientists from the Institute of Biology of the Czech Academy of Sciences have identified dangerous cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae, in Lipno Reservoir. The research revealed the presence of benthic cyanobacteria, which grow on surfaces like rocks and plants, in addition to the typical planktonic forms. These benthic varieties pose a particular risk to dogs. This summer, four dogs have died and three more have been poisoned after exposure to the algae at Lipno. Authorities are warning dog owners about the potential toxicity and advising caution near the reservoir. The algae produce toxins that can cause severe illness and even death in canines. Further monitoring of the reservoir is underway to assess the extent of the bloom.
