Thailand’s Electricity Generating Authority (EGAT) has initiated a five-phase plan to explore the feasibility of small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). The program encompasses initial studies, securing regulatory approvals, construction, operational phases, and eventual decommissioning processes. EGAT is currently seeking expert consultants to evaluate various aspects, including technology options, associated costs, suitable locations, and potential environmental consequences. Assessments will also cover legal compliance and earthquake risk analysis. This move signals a potential shift in Thailand’s energy strategy, diversifying beyond current sources. The project's progression hinges on the findings of the ongoing feasibility studies. Further details were discussed at a recent Matichon seminar by EGAT assistant governor Eakarat Samintarapanya.
